Natural Health Coaching

My blogging friend in France is offering her natural health coaching services online now! She is English so speaks both French and English fluently, and her philosophy is very balanced with there is a time for modern medicine (vaccines, antibiotics, etc), and a time for self-advocacy and getting to the root (naturally!) of problems instead of accepting the pharmaceutical band aids that are generally offered in doctors’ offices. I can tell you she’s brilliant and also has a great sense of humor with a sound perspective on all things health related. Check out her site and let me know if you end up working with her! Her blog post is below and you can find more info on contacting her and what to expect here: https://thehealthyepicurean.eu/natural-health-coaching/.

Just under 20 years ago, I visited an endocrinologist because I was suffering terrible palpitations. He did some blood tests and, seeing that my thyroid, iron levels, etc were normal, prescribed beta blockers. He seemed extremely taken aback when I wanted to know the cause of the palpitations, instead of just accepting his ‘bandaid’. The beta blockers worked well, but I was concerned that it seemed as though I might be beta blockered for life; there had to be a reason – my heart hadn’t just made a unilateral decision to ‘rave’ 24/7.

After some research, and a visit to a naturopathic doctor, it turned out I was very deficient in magnesium. This also explained the terrible muscle and joint pain I had been having. It sometimes really is that simple. I happily replaced my beta blockers, muscle relaxants and ibuprofen with magnesium-rich food, and a good magnesium supplement and haven’t looked back.

From birth to eight months, my son, Léo, slept in stretches of about an hour, when he would wake up screaming. The local doctor said he was ‘capricious’, and was doing his best ironing board impression at hourly intervals throughout the night for fun. After numerous pitiful attempts, I eventually found a wonderfully understanding pediatrician, with a forensic attention to detail and a sympathetic ear, who immediately diagnosed silent reflux. She prescribed the necessary medication, as well as changes to his eating and sleeping arrangements. That night my ‘capricious’ baby slept for 12 hours straight.

The other doctors had missed this diagnosis because it was ‘silent’ (he wasn’t vomiting or even regurgitating). I returned to see the local doctor because I thought she might be interested to hear the conclusion, perhaps for other patients. She flat-out refused to believe he had silent reflux on the basis that if you can’t see it, touch it, or test it, it doesn’t exist. She had made her helpful diagnosis of ‘capricious’ and she was sticking to it.

We still visit the doctor from time-to-time and, as you will read here, I am eternally grateful for many aspects of modern medicine. We are mostly vaccinated, and take things like antibiotics or cortisone when necessary. But there is a time and place for everything, and these two experiences turned out to be salutary: I learnt that in order to stay healthy, I had to advocate, sometimes forcefully, for my family’s health.

I started to study naturopathy 15 years ago, and I am a certified Natural Health Consultant and Educator. A number of people have contacted me to ask whether I provide online consultations. Over the years I have been consulting on an informal basis, but I would now like to offer this to everyone that might be interested. Please see this page for further information.

All-natural perfume making, or the new sourdough bread — The Healthy Epicurean

One of my blogging friends in the US, Kristen Schuhmann, whose blog, Blossom Herbs, is a go-to for all things herb-related, has written a beautiful book: All-Natural Perfume Making, fragrances to lift your mind, body and spirit. Change Blog Challenge

This post is part of the Litebeing Chronicles Change Challenge which is an almost yearly event that I’ve participated in years past. This year’s theme is change, and more specifically how living through this unprecedented time has provided insights and evolution that have changed me. It’s a theme that anyone could probably write a novel about so I encourage all of you to keep the theme going and write about your own changes during this year wherever it is you like to write. It seems to help solidify growth and progress when you can really look at it and put it into words. I saw a post somewhere, probably IG, that said, “Make a done it list instead of a to-do list for once.” I’m not sure if that was the exact wording but I like the thought behind it.

This year was so full of change that I had the distinct feeling in March that not only had a chapter ended in my life, but an entire book was abruptly slammed shut and a new one opened with crisp white pages but rather rigid rules. My sons and I moved from the only house they’ve known in March, the day after our district’s schools shut down due to the pandemic, and the exact same day that I received the news that my divorce was official. Funnily enough, that happened to be Friday the 13th and the move was indeed a difficult one. The packing process was emotionally draining as I found all the forgotten mementos of our life as a family of four, all the letters and photos, souvenirs and homemade cards. Even while trying to sort out which books were mine and which were my ex’s, a seemingly straightforward activity, I ran into romantic dedications on the inside covers, and memories of when it felt right tucked in at night with our respective books and the safe comfort of knowing the person next to me was meant to be there. When had that changed? Long before 2020, but it was this year I had to confront it all over and over again. Not only that, but I am not a natural planner/organizer so packing and moving as the only adult in a household of three was intensely difficult from a logistics point of view. My sons would try to help but I did 95% of it myself and had trouble with movers who canceled twice on me. Then I had to set up a new house on my own which again, was logistically difficult and did not play to my strengths to say the least. I loved the house from the start though and I am relieved to be out of that house that held so many memories and so much pain. This house we live in now is smaller and by most standards not as “nice” as the one we moved from, but I am grateful for it every single day. It is cozy, it’s in a phenomenal location, and I feel like I can breathe freely here.

This is all especially good because we have been in some sort of lock-down ever since moving here! I had no idea we’d be spending so much time within these walls when we moved in, as in all day everyday for months on end, so the gratitude I have for finding this place and the moving process being over is immense. In the beginning there were so many appliance and other issues with the house that it was causing a lot of extra stress after we were already strung out from the move itself. I could see how much the stress was weighing on the kids so I decided to try to lighten it all up with a bit of fun and told the kids we were going to hold a ritual to appease the house appliance spirits. I used our dog’s toy sheep as the sacrifice and let them stab it after some words of praise and pleading to the divine overlords of the house. I thought it was hilarious but only my youngest son understood I was having a bit of fun and thought it was comical. My older son thought I had lost my marbles and I later had to explain I was trying to make them laugh, not cause him more concern. He was relieved. Our pup was not amused whatsoever.

Ritual

Other changes have been less dramatic and clear cut, but I’ve spent more time meditating since I’ve had more time on my hands and that has been intensely rewarding. I’ve returned to outdoor running, something that I’d given up due to hills bothering my knee, but I guess my knee has healed because I run hills almost every day now and it’s been my favorite part of the day. I like to run as soon as the sun is up and it sets my entire day up on a happy note. It is one of those subtle things that turns out to be life changing over time.

Running

Our eating habits have changed and I have to say that it hasn’t been for the better. Without the more rigid schedules of school and work, the three of us tend to want meals at different times and cooking/eating has seemed like a full time activity in this house which has worn down my enjoyment of it. I used to like cooking a lot more than I do now and I desperately need to find a solution to this overwhelming issue, and I might have found one. I am going to try a home delivery service that delivers meals and also deli style grocery items that can be easily added to sandwiches or salads. I’ve never tried something like this and it feels like a cop-out for some reason, but I am going to give it a go anyway and see if the boys can take care of some more of their own meals if they just have to warm it up. If it turns out well I’ll share which delivery service it is but if this first one doesn’t work out I might try another until I hit upon something that works for us. One of my friends is fond of saying you have to accept where you are and do what you have to do, and this falls into that category. I know it’s a temporary situation that just needs some support for the time being, not a permanent lifestyle change.

One last personal change to share, though there are so many others from this year that I’m leaving out because this is already long enough, is that I’ve been feeling more and more myself during this year. The years preceding 2020 were harrowing years of a spiraling downward marriage, then the divorce, so in many ways 2020 has been a respite from the emotional confusion and drowning. It has offered me a quieter year where I could heal, reconnect with the parts of myself that are not stuck in survival mode, and begin to see the light and beauty in the world again. As strange and stressful as the year has been, I’ve been grateful for it every single day.

I hold out hope that all the ugliness that this year has exposed will start to heal too. I hope people embrace more compassion, more simplicity and quietness, more care for the earth and their fellow humans, and more understanding of how interconnected we all are. This year shined a light on all the divisiveness, nastiness, and ugliness that haunt humanity’s worst instincts, which ultimately is a good thing since hidden things cannot be healed. The shadow self creates regrettable behavior and judgement, whether it is the shadow self of an individual or of a collective, and I truly believe that the more we as individuals look at our own shadow selves and work to bring the light in, that work will transcend individual lives and light up the collective.

The closer we are to nature and our surrounding communities, the more connected we are as humans, in touch with our roots and our common humanity. As William Shakespeare said, “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.”

Thank you for reading and let me know if you write your own reflection on how living through 2020 has changed you.

Love and light💜✨

Essential Oil Sourcing and New Name

The new year and new decade weren’t quite enough for me, I needed a new name too. This website has bid farewell to its overly wordy title of the past, and is now named “Blossom Herbs”. I resonate with that word ‘blossom’ on many levels right now, and it seemed appropriate for what I try to do here with herbal tutorials, videos, and such. It’ll take a while before I get all the URLs changed and other places BA&A is hanging out, but the new year and decade seemed like a good time to start and if I waited until I was ready to tackle everywhere at once, I’d never do it, so here’s to baby steps all around.

A consumer advocate group asked me to post a link to their research on essential oil companies. I looked it over and it seems to be a good overview, so I agreed to share the link (below). They took notice of Aura Cacia’s sustainability record which is one reason I choose to use their essential oils and other products often. That and they are so accessible since they are at pretty much every natural foods store, and of course of high quality. They also gave a good review to Mountain Rose Herbs whom I also buy from quite a bit, and if you do any kind of herbal crafts I’m positive you do too! I encourage you to take a look at the list and see if your essential oil company of choice is on there and what kind of review they received.   Here’s the link: https://www.consumersadvocate.org/essential-oils

I hope your first week of 2020 has been a superb start to the year. Thank you for joining me here whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular~ I am so grateful for the connections. By the way, that picture has a recipe serum to go along with it. You can find it on my instagram page if you are interested.

Peace, magic, and all the best to all of you for the next 51 weeks and beyond.

Mission Possible Challenge

This post is part of a blogging challenge called: Divine Mission~ Possible, created by fellow blogger litebeing chronicles. The idea is for people to write about what their mission is, where they are on it, and really anything that relates to that. If you would like to join the challenge, please do! The challenge lasts through November and I did last year’s and found it to be quite inspiring to read the other bloggers posts and have to think through my own (Sense-ational Scents).

divine-mission6-1 (1)

I believe we are all here for a reason, or rather reasons, and that we all have special attributes, unique characteristics, and specific experiences that make up our paths and passions. Whether we fully enact these missions is up to us, though it is my belief that how we show up in the world on a daily basis is part of our mission, and every single day our missions leak out of us whether we like it or not. If we are on a path that resonates with our passions and values, then the ‘leaking’ is going to be mostly light-filled and uplifting. If we are not, then the leaking will come out as confused, inconsistent, and disembodied, though it may still be beautiful, but lacking clear energy behind it. (By the way, have you ever noticed how similarly spelled mission and passion are~ there must be something there!)

My mission relates to herbs, ecology, natural health, green beauty, and educating. 6E725201-6137-4617-B2DF-7FFBFFC0C674[1]The state of the environment is deeply concerning to me and specifically the state of our collective relationship to the environment. We (including myself) are not in flow with nature, giving and taking in a balanced way, but instead taking and taking with little regard for sustainability. It is my belief that the more people engage with nature in all ways, understanding nutrition beyond trendy diets, how herbs can help create and maintain health, how what we put on our bodies and the chemicals we surround ourselves with impact our moods, hormones, overall health, beauty, and aging, then that relationship with nature will start to be repaired. We have the ability to turn around humanity’s destructive ways, but it will take individual relationships to do that.

Personally I love to create with herbs and building community through bringing people together to learn about herbs and making products with them. That is the next step in my mission and one that I’ve begun through the online courses I created, but creating with people in real life is something that I feel is an important step in this digital, often lonely era in which we live. I’ve actually been engaging in Facebook groups lately (although FB is not my favorite place to hang out!) trying to get a feel for what people need/want/are missing in terms of natural health and herbs and wow, there is quite a lot of misinformation out there. I’m hoping to provide people with reliable resources and inspire others to always seek out herbs and other natural products to help create and maintain optimal health and well-being. Even if it seems like something that seems just genetic, like hair loss, or there’s nothing to be done about it, like food intolerances or gum recession, or something that requires pharmaceuticals, like high blood pressure, there are always natural options to try, even if just as complimentary therapy to whatever pharmaceutical is needed.

How we treat ourselves is also how we treat others, including the non-human beings we share the earth with such as plants and animals, and earth itself. The more we take care of ourselves in natural, holistic ways, the more it reflects in our our overall wellness and longevity, and in every relationship we have. It’s a microcosm of the macrocosm and interconnected on every single layer. For me, I want to help make it a joyful, beautiful experience, because healthy food isn’t about deprivation, it’s about enjoyment and long-term goals, and green beauty isn’t basic, it’s luxurious, and herbs and other natural remedies are not folk tales, they are effective and our birthright. I’ll admit, being ecologically aware can sometimes be depressing, but I truly think if we focus on the beauty and joy of the natural world and how we interact with it, then we can collectively create positive change.

These values, passions, and missions have been a part of my life since childhood, and if you want to read more about how they have manifested in my life, I wrote about that here: Herbal Journey.  I would love to hear about your life missions and where you feel you are on that path. If you want to read more of these, you can find links to others on litebeing chronicle’s page.

I’m inviting energy healer, Nicole, to join in on this challenge and anyone else who would like to give this some thought and share. Good Luck on wherever your mission takes you!

A Personal Note

This blog has been trucking along for a while now, so I thought I’d check in with a personal note on the goals and philosophy for this space. It might seem a tad erratic with herbal tutorials here, food recipes there, and ready-made product information, but to me the goals are the same. My main interest is to empower people with the knowledge of what is out there in the natural world, whether that means their garden, their spice cabinet, or their natural food store, that can enrich their life and enhance their health. I’m a big believer in the idea that we are advancing in technological ways faster than we can humanly adapt, a concept that has been around for decades but has been mostly conveniently ignored, and this is my small way of grounding myself and anyone else who is interested back to the real world, the actual earth we inhabit, the roots that have brought us to this crazy point, and the traditions that have made us communal creatures. So much is lost each day to isolation, stretched schedules, imitation foods, and processed products, that the richness of life is threatened in the push towards better, faster, easier. But for what end? The Slow Foods Movement is a beautiful example of people taking a stand and saying we’ll take the more nutritious meal over the faster one, and that same idea can be applied to just about every aspect of life. Technology, and especially social media, are pushing images and information onto us and into us at an ever-increasing rate, leaving everyone a little on edge, if not completely frantic, and feeling always and forever behind. The laws haven’t kept up so how could our long-evolved emotions, our sense of time and space, our ideas of community, morality, humanity? They haven’t had the time and the future certainly isn’t carving out space for us to collectively take a time out and regroup, unless something major happens which certainly wouldn’t be pretty, so the best thing I can think to do is to try to be mindful of it all and not get swept up and away into the vacuum of a false reality. For humanity’s sake, for the plants’ and animals’ sake, and for the earth as a whole, we need to remain thoughtful. Humans are so darn proud of their capacity for higher thinking, yet we collectively choose to dull it on the regular. We must be mindful caretakers of each other and the earth we inhabit because it is quite simply our birthright. We can step up, or not, but the consequences of ‘not’ are unfortunately extreme.

3C1FD6E1-D954-40E0-A007-774027D68578[1]

I engage in social media reluctantly, which is why I don’t do all the regular things bloggers generally do. There is a formula for it actually, the whole blogging thing, and I’ve studied how it’s done as is my nature, but I’ve decided against the things that do not resonate with me, which is most of it. This may very well mean this space will have to evolve into something else, but for now I’m happy to connect with people in a way that feels somewhat natural though it does involve the very technology and social media that I just now protested. It’s a complicated world and a strange time to try to fit into it in an organic way that embraces long held values, addresses fears, and is done in an effort to try to share in an authentic and positive way, but this is what I’m working towards. I guess this is just a meandering way of saying what Shakespeare said so succinctly: “Though this be madness, yet there is method in ’t.” Hamlet (2.2.204-09).

Thank you, very sincerely, for being a part of my world and allowing me to be part of yours. You are a true gift and a treasure.

All the best to you and yours.

Announcement for Subscribers

Hello! I’ve been working on putting together an essential oil course and wanted to let you know that it is about finished, so please expect an email from me in the next day or two. I wanted to thank my subscribers for being here, and also was hoping for some feedback from you lovelies, so the email will include a discount code to view the course for free. There will be a limited number (because I assume not all of you will choose to take the course) so if you are definitely interested, please let me know so I can get you the information first. You can preview the course on my page “Courses” on this website.  Thank you for reading this blog and being part of this community!

Mystery Blogger Award

Lately I’ve been working on another project so I’ve been a tad quieter than usual. I’ll be sharing that project in a couple of weeks here, but subscribers will get the info first with something free as well, so if you are a reader but not a subscriber, now’s a good time. The reason for that is simply because I need an email address to share privately what I’ll later share publicly here, (without the freebie).

Thanks so much to Tracy Joan Reid at Creative Hues for the award. Her blog is full of creative ideas to help you indulge your inner artist no matter how much time you have on hand. I’m so happy to connect to other bloggers in this way and enjoy the awarding that goes around since the internet is full of so much negativity, and the awards foster positive connections and good feelings.

Here’s the info on this award: “The Mystery Blogger Award is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.” –Okoto Enigma(Mystery Blogger Award creator)

I’m truly honored and love the idea of inspiring others in some small way. Here are the rules:

1) Put The Logo on your blog

2) List the rules

3) Thank whoever nominated you and add a link to their blog

4) Mention the creator of the award and provide a link

5) Tell your readers three things about yourself

6) Answer the questions you were asked

7) You have to nominate 10 – 20 people

8) Notify your nominees by commenting on their blog

9) Ask your nominees any 5 questions of their choice. One weird and one funny one.

10) Share a link to your best post

So, I guess I’ve completed 1-4 above, so now three things about myself:

  1. I was born in the year of the rabbit
  2. I cannot remember cars by what they look like so I memorize license plates
  3. I love to read

Questions I’ve been asked:

1. What is your best childhood memory? All the make-believe games my sister and I played.

2.What do you feel most proud of? My sons are caring people.

3.If you could travel anywhere where would you go any why? Italy and France are tied for this one. I love European aesthetic and culture, the old world beauty and values, and the food, but haven’t been to either of these two countries yet.

4.If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be? Is my dog a possession? If so, I guess I have to say her, and my lilies in the backyard, and…I don’t know, I feel like I could really get rid of just about anything.

5.What would you want your tombstone to say? Well, my favorite Shakespeare quote would be fitting although a tad cynical: Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. –Macbeth (5.5)
